Professor Yaron D. Barac
,Cardiothoracic surgeon
Heart and lung transplants and LVAD implant
Director; Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program, Beilnson Hospital
I believe that effective medicine begins with a human touch between the doctor and the patient, a look in the eyes, a smile and just simply, bonding.
I believe that the medical and surgical treatment before, during and after surgery has to be nothing less than PERFECT, and must last as long as the patient needs it!
Last, but certainly not least, I believe that an excellent doctor and surgeon is one who performs research and asks questions so he can be better and wiser for his patients tomorrow!
CABG
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery is performed by a cardiac surgeon to overcome coronary stenosis or obstruction in one or more of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart. In the procedure, the stenosis is bypassed by introducing a vein or artery graft to the coronary artery, beyond the obstruction point, and connecting it the aorta, in order to renew the blood supply to the heart. The most important bypass in any CABG surgery is the LIMA to the LAD anastomosis, which is considered the crown jewelry of the CABG operation.
Valve surgery
The heart contains four different valves. The most common intervention of a cardiac surgeon in adult patients is in either the aortic valve, the mitral valve or the tricuspid valve, to either repair or replace the valve affected by valve stenosis or valve regurgitation. The replacement valve will be either a mechanical valve or a biological valve, each associated with its own advantages and disadvantages. In any case, prior to surgery we will discuss the various options suitable for you and we will decide together on the best option for YOU!
Aorta surgery
The aorta is the largest artery in the human body. It arises from the heart and supplies oxygenated blood to all the organs in the human body. A cardiac surgeon operates on the ascending thoracic aorta. The major risk of an aneurysm of the aorta (aorta enlargement) is a sudden rupture, that can cause massive bleeding, severe aortic regurgitation, severe decline in the ability of the heart to contract or a severe reduction in the blood supply to the heart. Hence, in case of a substantial enlargement of the ascending aorta, the guidelines recommend replacing this part of the aorta with a Dacron graft.
Transplantation
Heart and lung transplantations are considered the “holy grail” of cardiac surgery, being the most delicate and complex operations in the field. Transplant candidates are the most complex patients in the entire medical field, due to the cardiac or respiratory failure that they experience prior to surgery. Hence, surgeons performing these surgeries must receive specialized training to perform these procedures, and must gain experience in a world-renowned transplant centers. These transplants are well planned and are performed at Beilinson Hospital, where we have performed more than 1,300 heart and lung transplants and LVAD implants.
Professor Yaron D. Barac
In 2015, Professor Barac was chosen by “Globes” magazine as one of the 40 most-promising young Israelis, the only physician in the list.

Professor Barac is a summa cum laude alumnus of the Technion medical faculty, with both an MD and PhD. He completed his residency under the leadership of Professor Dan Aravot at Rabin Medical Center and was chosen to be the first Israeli to complete a heart and lung transplant, LVAD implant, mitral repair and aorta surgery fellowship (3 years) at Duke University Medical Center, one of the top transplant centers in the world.
Professor Barac returned to Israel to head the Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Programs at the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Rabin Medical Center, Petach-Tikva, Israel (Beilinson). He also acts as the director of the Cardiothoracic Residency Program and the director the Cardiothoracic Surgery Translational Research Laboratory and The Clinical Research Unit.
Professor Barac published over 60 papers and wrote book chapters, has lectured on his work across the globe and has been awarded numerous prizes, scholarships and research grants.

In 2022, Professor Barac was chosen by “Dun and Bradstreet” company as one of Israel's best surgeons.

The clinic

The main aim of the first meeting in the clinic is to get acquainted with each other!
In the beginning of the meeting I will learn about your medical history, co-morbidities and your general lifestyle.
Subsequently, I will focus on the exact reason for which you came to see me, the underlying causes and the things that disrupt your daily routine.
In the next stage, we will discuss the currently available treatment options – medications, minimally invasive procedures and the surgical options.
I will devote time to hear about what is on your heart and mind, what your treatment preferences are, and, together, we will decide on the next steps – surveillance, medication adjustments or surgery.
If we will decide that surgery is the best option for you, we will then decide on the specific surgery needed, and will discuss the specific grafts and valves that will be used in the surgery.
Furthermore, we will decide on the most appropriate date for the operation, and I will describe to you the things you will need in preparation for surgery. Moreover, I will detail all stages, from admission to the hospital prior to surgery until discharge from the hospital.
